Tell Your iPhone to Stop Opening iPhoto!
Every time I plugged in my iPhone, it had this nasty habit of opening iPhoto for me. Not because it wanted to drive me to drink, but because iPhoto is set to open any time a digital camera is connected to my computer – which, technically, an iPhone is.
To stop this behavior, you won’t find any preference in iTunes or iPhoto, where you would normally think to look. This little gem can be found in a separate application in your Applications folder called Image Capture.
Open Image Capture and go to the Preferences menu (under the Image Capture menu item). Under the General tab, change the option for “When a camera is connected…” to “No Application” instead of “iPhoto”.

This means you’ll have to manually start iPhoto when you connect your digital camera, but you won’t have to CLOSE iPhoto every time you plug in your iPhone (which, for me, is a heck of a lot more often than plugging in a camera!)
Yes! Thanks!
Perfect. Thank you muchly.
Thanks so much. That’s a huge help.
I would have never guessed this preference would be under Image Capture of all applications. Apple needs to fix this and put the option to open iPhoto when connecting to the computer in iTunes or iPhoto.
Thanks was looking for that little bug everywhere!
You have saved so much time for many you don’t even know.
a little over a year after you posted this information, it’s still coming in handy! thanks!

Glad I found this tip, but . . . . .
When I open Image Capture, it says: ‘You cannot open the application “Image Capture” because it may be damaged or incomplete.’ What is that about?? Any clues or suggestions? Many thanks, Roof on Fire

Thank-you! Was looking for the same answer for my ipod touch.
iPhoto 09 finally has this preference setting in its own preferences panel. yay! But thanks for the tip because I was just trying to remember how to do it on an old iPhoto on an old PowerBook. Result
This got rid of a problem that was REALLY irritating me, especially as my iPhoto is buggy and likes to freeze all the time. THANK YOU.
Thank you, it was getting annoying.
Oh thanks goodness for this!
My hero!
Sneaky sneaky…Thank you so much, that has been making me insane for MONTHS. I don’t know why I didn’t think to look there (if you could see my face, I’d be rolling my eyes).

Thanks you so much! I was about to throw my Macbook out the window!
Thank you… this has been driving me crazy for about a year!
Awesome! I’ve just moved from iPhoto to Picasa so it’s doubly great to know how and where to control this behaviour. Many thanks!
Good god, thank you – as others have said, you’ve saved me a huge headache!
Thank you, that was the most annoying thing about docking my iPhone!
Thanks!
I’d like to echo all the other people on here and say “thank you.” I couldn’t stand my iphone opening iphoto! Fixed now!
THANK YOU! thank you! thank you.
Thanks but to let people know at least the version of iphoto i am using has that feature in it know so there is no need to open up image capture
iPhoto opening all the time was driving me completely insane.
I tried iPhoto preferences awhile back and since I didn’t see any option I assumed there wasn’t one. Glad I googled again tonight! I have put up with that extra time it takes to load iPhoto and then close it for way too long.
I appreciate the info. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
