- and the Image Capture app no longer has any prefs, but instead you have device-specific settings at bottom left – JUST what we needed!

this is much better then the other solution:

iPhoto->Preferences->General. Change the option “Connecting camera opens” option to “No application”

coz not all OS has that ‘connecting camera opens’ option

Like everyone else – thanks for this! It was a huge help and reduced my embarrassment when attaching my iPhone to my MacBook. I used ot have to say “yeah, it just does that, and I’m not sure how to shut it off”. Not very Mac-like.
